Investigative thinking
Real life investigation is a dynamic process that requires frequent decision making. Skilled investigators make their judgements based on a rational and logical theory about what has happened called a hypothesis. However, the process of reasoning involved in hypothesis is vulnerable to bias, expediency and subjectivity which are natural influences on human thinking.
To avoid the problems associated with these characteristics, investigators must adopt an objective mindset, making decisions through logic rather than emotion, instinct, and experience. When interviewing this involves pursuing reliable information from all victims, witnesses and suspects. This session outlines the factors that influence our thinking and provides guidance on how to remain objective as an investigator and interviewer.
