Subject interview | First question and answer

This session focuses on a single aspect of the interview – the first question and answer. A subject’s account can be initiated in the same way a witness using an open question. However, it is a reality that subjects will be aware that there may be consequences for them from describing their actions and may be reluctant to explain themselves. Therefore, this session outlines an alternative type of opening question – one that uses a selected part of the evidence gathered in combination with an open question to prompt the subject to provide a response.

The session also defines the types of response that a subject can give.

There is a handout for this session.
